Marathon, spoil and filter. The role of audiences before digital audiovisual

Authors

Abstract

The present work aims to investigate, characterize and propose theoretical conceptualizations around new forms of audiovisual decoding on the Internet. In this regard, the video-on-demand platforms bring together formats, genres and uses that reproduce traditional forms of media while trying new ways of appropriation. These platforms propose a shift from logics typical of traditional screens (like live, grid, prime time, rating and zapping) to those related to interactivity, such as marathon, spoiler, leak and on demand. Likewise, these screens are involved in the production of prequels, spinoffs and crossovers, and they also act as audiovisual universes in which transmedia narratives, cultural convergence and fandoms must be conceptualized. Within this context, the present work proposes an analysis of these practices by focusing on the role of audiences and from a communicational perspective in line with the studies by Roger Silverstone and Henry Jenkins.
